01Short answer

What Are PCOS Nutrition Supplements?

PCOS nutrition supplements are vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that people take alongside food and lifestyle changes when managing polycystic ovary syndrome. They are an add-on, not a treatment on their own. Whether one is useful depends on the person's lab results, diet and medicines, so a doctor should guide the choice.

An add-on, not a fix

Food, movement, sleep and medical care come first. A supplement sits on top of them.

Evidence varies

Some supplements have more research behind them than others. Some people need none.

Personal, lab-led choices

The right answer depends on your results, your medicines and your doctor's advice.

Institute Nutrition teaches this topic through online courses. This page points you to those courses and does not recommend any supplement, brand or dose. If you have PCOS and are thinking of starting a supplement, speak to your doctor first.

06Evidence

What Research Says About PCOS Nutrition Supplements

A good course teaches you to weigh evidence. Here is one honest example.

Inositol: a common example

A 2024 systematic review, written to inform the 2023 international PCOS guideline, found some metabolic benefits for myo-inositol or D-chiro-inositol, possible ovulation benefits from D-chiro-inositol and no clear effect on other outcomes. Its abstract concludes that the evidence supporting inositol in PCOS is limited and inconclusive.

The 2023 international PCOS guideline

Led by Monash University, with partners across 71 countries and six continents. It contains 254 recommendations and practice points, based on the best available evidence, clinical expertise and consumer preferences.

What this means when you read about PCOS nutrition supplements

  • Claims differ in strength, so check the evidence instead of following a trend.
  • A supplement that suits one person may be unnecessary for another.
  • Your lab results, your medicines and your doctor's advice come first.
07Safety

Before You Start Any PCOS Nutrition Supplements

Six questions to take to your doctor. They are prompts for a conversation and are not medical advice.

  1. 1Have I discussed this supplement with my doctor?
  2. 2Do I know which lab result or symptom it is meant to address?
  3. 3Have I told my doctor about every medicine and supplement I already take?
  4. 4Am I pregnant, or trying to conceive? If so, check with my doctor first.
  5. 5Does the label list every ingredient and the amount per serving?
  6. 6How will we judge whether it is working, and when will we review it?

They are an add-on and not a treatment on their own. Whether one is useful depends on the person's lab results, diet and medicines, so a doctor should guide the choice.
Can PCOS nutrition supplements cure PCOS?
No. Supplements do not cure PCOS. The PCOS Nutrition Course page lists guidelines for unnecessary supplement use, so learning when not to use a supplement is part of the topic. Evidence differs from one supplement to another, and some people may not need any. Ask a qualified doctor before you start.
Is inositol proven to work for PCOS?
Not conclusively. A 2024 systematic review in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, written to inform the 2023 international PCOS guideline, states that the evidence supporting inositol in PCOS is limited and inconclusive. Talk to your doctor about whether it suits you.

Ask the team on WhatsApp before you enrol, and remember that a course certificate is not a licence to practise.
Can I prescribe supplements to clients after the course?
Not on the strength of this course alone. All INC courses are for knowledge upgradation, not for practice. Who may advise on or prescribe supplements depends on your qualifications and local rules, so check what applies to you.
Are the PCOS courses live or recorded?
The PCOS Nutrition Course page does not state its format clearly. Institute Nutrition says it offers courses in live and recorded formats. Level 4 is built from online sessions, Q&A sessions and study material. Ask the team on WhatsApp for the current format and schedule before you pay.
